How to Transfer WhatsApp to a New Phone Without Losing Chats

Years of conversations, family photos, voice notes, and important documents live inside WhatsApp — losing them during a phone switch is a gut punch nobody deserves. The good news is that WhatsApp's transfer tools have matured enormously: whether you're moving Android to Android with the same number, changing your number, or even jumping from iPhone to Android, there's a reliable path. Follow the method that matches your situation, and verify the backup before you wipe the old phone.

Before You Start: The Golden Rules

Method 1: Android to Android, Same Number (Recommended)

This is the most common scenario, and WhatsApp now offers a direct phone-to-phone transfer that's faster and more complete than cloud restore.

Option A: Direct transfer (fastest)

  1. On the old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Move chats to Android... actually the current path is Settings > Chats > Transfer chats — tap Start.
  2. On the new phone, install WhatsApp, verify your same phone number, and when prompted, tap Transfer chat history from old phone.
  3. A QR code appears on the new phone — scan it with the old phone's camera when prompted.
  4. Keep both phones unlocked, close together, with Wi-Fi on. The transfer runs over a local connection; a few GB can take 10–30 minutes.
  5. When complete, tap Done. Your chats, media, and settings appear on the new phone.

Option B: Google Drive backup and restore

If the phones aren't together, use a cloud backup:

  1. On the old phone: WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup. Check that your Google account is selected, choose Back up, and include videos if you want them (toggle Include videos — this makes the backup much larger).
  2. Wait for the backup to finish completely — note the time and size shown.
  3. On the new phone: install WhatsApp, verify the same number, and sign in to the same Google account.
  4. WhatsApp will detect the backup — tap Restore, then wait for media to download in the background.

Tip: free Google accounts include 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos. If your backup is too large, either exclude videos or free up Drive space first.

Method 2: Changing Your Phone Number Too

Do the number change before moving phones, on the old device:

  1. Insert the new SIM into the old phone (or eSIM equivalent).
  2. Open WhatsApp: Settings > Account > Change number > Next.
  3. Enter the old number, then the new number, and tap Next > Done.
  4. Choose whether to notify contacts — you can notify all, selected contacts, or nobody.
  5. Now run a fresh chat backup (Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up).
  6. Move to the new phone and restore using the new number as in Method 1.

Method 3: iPhone to Android

Apple-to-Android transfers are officially supported:

  1. On the iPhone, ensure WhatsApp is updated and run a backup (Settings > Chats > Chat Backup) — though the cable method below doesn't strictly need it.
  2. Connect the phones with a USB-C to Lightning cable (or use the wireless transfer flow on Samsung's Smart Switch / Pixel setup).
  3. During new-phone setup, when asked to transfer data, select WhatsApp.
  4. On the iPhone, open WhatsApp and scan the QR code shown on the Android phone, then tap Start.
  5. Complete Android setup, install WhatsApp, sign in with the same number, and tap Import when prompted.

Limitation to know: iPhone-to-Android transfers move chats and media, but call history and some settings don't carry over. Peer-to-peer payment history also stays behind.

What Gets Transferred (and What Doesn't)

Troubleshooting Common Failures

What If You've Already Lost the Old Phone?

If your old phone is lost, stolen, or dead, the direct transfer is impossible — but you're not out of options. As long as you can receive SMS on your number (get a replacement SIM from your carrier with the same number), you can still recover everything from the cloud:

  1. Install WhatsApp on the new phone and verify your number via the SMS code sent to your replacement SIM.
  2. Sign in to the same Google account that held your chat backup.
  3. Tap Restore when WhatsApp detects the Google Drive backup.

This is why automatic backups matter so much: with Settings > Chats > Chat backup set to daily, the most you'll ever lose is a few hours of messages. Without any backup, unfortunately, there's no way to recover chats — WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption means even WhatsApp itself can't retrieve them. Set a calendar reminder to check your backup date once a month; it takes ten seconds and it's the cheapest insurance in tech.

End-to-End Encrypted Backups: Extra Protection

Standard WhatsApp backups on Google Drive are encrypted in transit and at rest on Google's servers — but for the truly privacy-conscious, WhatsApp offers end-to-end encrypted backups: not even Google or WhatsApp can read them.

  1. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
  2. Tap Turn on and create a password or 64-digit encryption key.
  3. Write it down somewhere safe — this is critical. If you lose this password, your backup becomes permanently unreadable. WhatsApp cannot reset it for you.

Should you enable it? If your chats contain sensitive business or personal information, yes — it's the only way to keep your backup as private as your chats. Just treat that password like a house key: store it in a password manager or written somewhere secure, never only in your head.

FAQ

Can I transfer WhatsApp without Google Drive?

Yes — the direct phone-to-phone transfer (QR code method) moves everything locally without any cloud backup. Both phones just need to be together on Wi-Fi.

Will I lose my chats if I change my number?

Not if you use the in-app Change Number feature before moving. It migrates your account, groups, and settings to the new number seamlessly.

How long does a WhatsApp transfer take?

Text-only histories transfer in minutes. With several gigabytes of photos and videos, expect 15–45 minutes over the direct method, or longer via cloud restore depending on your internet speed.

Do I need the old phone at all?

For the direct transfer, yes. For Google Drive restore, no — you only need the same phone number (to receive the verification SMS) and the same Google account.
